Student FAQ – UA Trombone Studio

Do I have to be a “perfect” player to audition?

Not at all. I’m listening for potential, not perfection. If you have solid basics, a good attitude, and a real interest in getting better, you’re exactly the kind of student we want. College is where you grow into your best playing — you don’t have to arrive finished.

What should I play for my audition?

Play music that lets you sound like you:

  • One lyrical piece and one more technical piece is ideal

  • Etudes, solos, or excerpts are all fine

  • It’s okay to use music you’ve already prepared for All-State or Solo & Ensemble

Harder isn’t better — more musical is better.

What if I get nervous?

Everyone does. In fact, I expect you to! The day I lose all nerves before a performance is the day I should retire from active performing. Those butterflies are my companions on audition days, and I welcome them back like an old friend. Luckily, since we know each other so well they don’t bother me like they used to. Auditions here feel more like a short lesson than a test. We’ll talk, you’ll play, I may offer one idea to try, and we’ll see how you respond. I care much more about your attitude and effort than a single mistake.

Will I only study classical music?

Classical playing is the foundation, but it’s not the whole picture. Students here also explore:

  • Jazz and commercial styles

  • Recording projects

  • Arranging and composing

  • Chamber music and creative collaborations

  • Teaching and community work

Your musical life can be as broad as your interests.

Can I really make a living doing this?

Yes — especially if you think bigger than one job title. Many musicians combine:

  • Performing

  • Teaching private lessons

  • Arranging or composing

  • Audio/video editing

  • Arts projects and side gigs

I help you develop those extra skills so you have options and income in every season of life.

What’s the studio community like?

Supportive, hardworking, and a little nerdy about trombone in the best way. Older students help younger ones, we celebrate each other’s successes, and we take the music seriously without taking ourselves too seriously.

What if I’m interested in Music Education and Performance?

That’s normal. Many students start unsure, and UA lets you explore both paths before locking in decisions. We’ll build a plan that fits your goals as they develop.

Can I visit before I decide?

Absolutely. You can:

  • Schedule a trial lesson

  • Sit in on rehearsal

  • Meet current students

  • Tour the music building

Just send me an email and we’ll set it up.
